"They played the songs I knew they would. Some old, some new, the same formula stays true." -Nofx, Medio-Core
It might seem an odd way to start a review with some lyrics but it sums up [spunge]'s set list perfectly. Playing a mix of songs off all albums, they focused on the singles they've released along with classics like Whitehouse and Kicking Pigeons. Maybe it's time for a change of setlist guys!
Performance wise they were pretty sound, even if there was a ''deliberate mistake'' in Skanking Song (in other words Des mucked up the solo) but the place they shone was, as always, audience participation even if the audience themselves were rubbish! Calls for "Captain What?" and general cheers were met with such pathetic responses that the band decided to go on strike and literally walked off stage before coming back, deciding that they'd wasted too much time and could no longer play Change Of Scene.
Maybe it was in fact, that the audience weren't up for [spunge] at all. After all the crowd was made up of mainly ageing punks who were there to see the Damned. They displayed a strong dislike of [spunge] with the occasional bottle being flung towards the stage. After a few had been hurled, Al gave up and invited them to throw whatever they wanted at the band while they guarded Jem's kit. Suffice to say there was a lot of water bottles, empty and full, flung towards the stage as well as various other bits and pieces. "We've put up with your shit, now put up with ours," Al said, but it seemed to have no effect on the punks who were only there to see the Damned.
Overall, [spunge] played well despite the crowd. So when can we next expect you in the Boro guys? "Three days? Three weeks?"
