29 gigs, 22 cd's, untold other crap off ebay (including a [spunge] sponge and a set of Roots badges) and literally thousands of miles later and me and spunge are no more.
I first heard of spunge when my mate gave a casette (yes it was that long ago) he made with a load of music on. On this tape was about 30 songs, most of which were metal and pretty crap, one of which was kicking pigeons. I must have rewound that sound in my car dozens of times before i eventually bought pedigree chump.
My first gig was with my bird at the time. It was in Nottingham during the That should cover it tour. I hadnt been to a lot of gigs before and I remember it just blowing me away. It was the first of many many gigs but will always be one of my most memorable. Other memorable ones was the Mean fiddler in London when me and my mate were talking to Wol before the gig for ages without knowing who he was, Redhill with a load of us causing absolute havoc all night, and my all time favourite having travelled 300 miles to Mansfield. We were talking to the band for ages before hand and Alex devoted Roots to "those 2 boys from south London". In all of the gigs I have been to I have never seen a spunge song dedicated to anyone, and that was an absolutely f*cking brilliant night. Ive never been one to talk to band members just for the sake of it, (what do people talk about with them?) but that was such a great day, even though I drove home so drunk i kept seeing cars on the M1 in front of me that weren't there.
The reason why this is my last post, and as it turns out the gig in Islington academy when Fandangle supported was my last gig (so close to 30, damn) is that I'm tired of it. I got tired of the constant delay of the new album, I ot tired of the "more coming soon" lines from the band, and I'm tired of being more into the band than the actual band are themselves. The last album was ok but no-where near as good as I had hoped. The gigs have been going steadily downhill probably since the one more go tour.
I know the band are middle-aged (almost) now and it's just a hobby to them now, but there's just no effort in it anymore. Its virtually the same setlist every time, they never really promote their gigs, apart from maybe a mail-out. They are just squeezing as many decent gigs as they can from a band that, to be honest, ended when One more go flopped.
I never thought I would catch me saying this, but they probably should have split up after the tour for the last album. It just seems like it shouldn't end like this, with them playing to 50, then 40, and eventually 10 uninterested people int eh back room of a pub. It's been fun guys, but if you were going to try to keep going despite of everything, you should have made a bit more of an effort with the fans you still have. there's a reason why only me, Andy and maybe Jackman only ever come on here anymore.
So goodbye all. Now I just have to figure out what to do with this [spunge] tattoo on my right forearm
